Are Harnesses Better for a Dog's Neck Than Collars?
Harnesses move leash load away from the neck, which can be useful, but that does not make every harness automatically appropriate for every dog.

If the specific goal is reducing leash force around the neck, a harness has an obvious mechanical advantage: the leash is attached to equipment that contacts the chest and torso instead of a band encircling the neck.
That does not settle every equipment question, but it is a meaningful difference.
Why neck pressure can matter
Dogs that pull hard can create repeated tension through a collar. Some dogs also have medical conditions in which a veterinarian may prefer minimizing neck pressure.
A published study examining intraocular pressure found greater pressure increases in a collar condition than a harness condition during applied leash force. That finding is often used in the collar-versus-harness debate, but it should be interpreted narrowly rather than turned into a universal disease claim.
A harness moves the problem if it fits badly
Avoiding neck pressure is not helpful if the harness rubs the armpits, rides into the throat, rotates badly, or creates another obvious comfort problem.
Fit still has to work.
Identification is a separate job
Many owners use a collar primarily for identification while attaching the leash to a harness. That separates the ID function from the load-bearing walking function.
Whether that arrangement makes sense depends on the dog and activity.
Medical questions deserve individual advice
If your dog has glaucoma, a collapsing trachea, neck pain, spinal disease, respiratory problems, or another condition that could change equipment choice, ask your veterinarian what they want you to avoid. General internet advice cannot account for the details of the case.

A harness can reduce direct leash loading on the neck, which is often the main reason owners choose one. But "better for the neck" should not be expanded into "better in every way." Check the whole dog, the whole fit, and the actual walking behavior.
